Moron vs. smart guy is a bit of a simplification. I don't know John Stewart, but judging by his overall public persona, he seems to have a strong sense of moral duty to the public. Whether intended or not, John Stewart is fighting against the inherent flaw of human government and its institutions, which is merely that it is at some level overseen and designed by human beings, who are inherently self-interested. There is a definite societal tension between government, individual, and between individuals; and the government will always be composed of individuals. A modern biological perspective might offer that we are adapted to be both societal and miserly, because both offer substantial benefits, and might even set up some kind of feedback loop that progresses humanity towards an equilibrium of human equity in society, under the oversight of an empirically determined optimum government that is strong enough, and no more; a Kantean idea at its root.

Basically, I don't think John Stewart is against stupid people, but rather against those aspects of our evolutionary past that are holding us back. He gives a voice to that side of ourselves that is fiercely rationally moral. Implicitly, he must ascribe to the idea that things could be different and better, if only we worked rationally towards change, which rubs off onto us, the audience. It helps immensely that he's funny, which allows the truth in his words and actions to resonate at a less cerebral level, a level that a broader audience can relate to.

I don't know, those are my modest thoughts on why he's so damn cool and admirable. I also have a humanities final in a couple days, and this was a short exercise in the application of Enlightenment thought to modern events, stimulated by your comment. I apologize for any discomfort.
