Ali G vs. Kent Hovind
Da Ali G Show does science. Ali G (Sasha Baron-Cohen) and creationist Kent Hovind discuss evolution.

This is soo frustrating. The panel he had there could have SCHOOLED Hovind... Look, I give him respect for pushing his character to the limit, but I just can't help but consider this a missed opportunity.

"the floater..."

then silence.

Sure, the rest of the panel could have shredded Hovind, but I think making Hovind answer the who-didn't-flush question like a 5 year old was great all on it's own.

This is frustrating to me. Who is Hovind's agent? You could never go on a program like this and have reasonable debate. Everyone knows it's 'crush the Christian'. In fact, there are few places where you can actually have the debate, including colleges....hum.....

You're seriously defending Hovind? Now THAT is comedy!

Re: Ali G vs. Kent Hovind
Yes. I consider him the underdog here. I've heard that there is some controversy surrounding him in Christian circles, but I'm on the side of the Creationists.

Honestly, this argument has become like abortion - there can be no winners. I see little honest debate from the evolution side - just angst and anger. Interestingly, the best debate I got was from someone on this site, who unfortunately, didn't understand the point, but who debated honestly.

But, unless the payoff can be huge, it makes no sense to walk into the lions den. Going on this show made no sense, as no real debate can occur.

I think your main points in the other thread was that people were just making fun of Ray Comfort for being Ray Comfort. And that people who accept evolution don't think very deeply about the details. I'd be willing to continue discussion on that page if you'd like.

But I'm always amazed that anybody shows up on Ali G and doesn't figure out what's going on, even if they've never heard of him before. He relies on the politeness of his guests to humiliate them. It's pretty distasteful, and usually not so much fun to watch. But this one was pretty funny between the annoying bits.

I'm pretty sure I saw this one a couple of years ago on Milk and Cookies, but can't find it in the database.

Love him or hate him, Sacha Baron Cohen is a slick guy. He and Hovind have a lot in common, in that they both feign ignorance in order to prove a point.

"...little honest debate from the evolution side..."

There have been at least 5 (that I can recall at this particular moment) evolution vs. creationism debate videos on this very site showing debates between highly respected leaders from both sides of the argument, at least one even sponsored by a Catholic university. The only conclusion I can come to from a statement like yours is that you are just not paying attention. Sadly, this seems to be the case with most defenders of creationism or ID or whichever obfuscated pseudonym the fantasy is hiding under at the moment.

If you're looking for honesty, I honestly believe Kent Hovind is a complete and utter moron who chooses to ignore the truth even when overwhelming evidence and fact stares him right in the face. I also honestly believe that any thinking person can have little respect for the willfully ignorant, such as Hovind.

The angst and anger you find in your opponents is likely rooted in disgust and disbelief on their part. Disgust that an otherwise intelligent person who clearly has access to modern science and fact can still choose to willfully ignore said facts and cling to myths, defending them as though they were as true, testable and proven as the molecular structure of water.

And finally, if you still find this too harsh, angst-ridden or angry, I'll ask: if one's faith is too weak to withstand simple criticism, what purpose does it really serve?

"Who is Hovind's agent?"

Judging by his career path, probably his dealer.

I think any debate based on logic will become "crush the Christian." Maybe it's not the venue, or even the participants. (I'm saying Creationism defies logic.)

Are you actually grousing about your standards for "reasonable debate" not being met by Da Ali G Show? Seriously?

Ali G is one of the few people that can make be laugh hysterically while I am repeatedly smashing my head against the monitor in empathetic embarrassment.

Re: Ali G vs. Kent Hovind
His agent probably only agreed to it because it wasn't going to be a debate format. Regardless, you can't win an argument with a child like Hovind by using logic. Ali G attacked him with his own game and won in the same way that Hovind would normally "win" (in his own mind) an argument over somebody logical.

(Homo Sapiens meaning 'wise man' is Latin not Greek though. Homo in Greek means 'same')

At 4:06 Hovind gets to experience what it's like for science-literate people who try to engage him. He looks like he's really enjoying that moment when he can hang out with the smart kids. I get a glimmer of joy to see him share that moment of camaraderie with some real scientists. It's cute.

Well said. Come to think of it, I noticed that, too.
