Content like this makes me feel even more agnostic.
Re: The Rachel Maddow Show: Apocalypse Now?
"...none of us have the right to judge anybody else's religious beliefs..."
Oh yes I do. We all do, and we all should. If religious belief were allowed just a little more scrutiny and a little less of the sacred-cow treatment everyone - including the devout believers - would be better off. Any dogma that can't withstand criticism has no business existing in the first place. Any faith that is too weak to answer it's critics and must instead adopt a doctrine of censoring those critics has no ground to stand on.

Agreed.
Again Rachel Maddow disappoints me. She says a lot of false stuff that she must believe are harmless points that nobody would challenge, but it really ticks me off. I feel she does just as much damage as she does good work and I'd prefer there was somebody else in her position.

I do like Rachel, I think she's great at what she does. But... you're totally right in that she sidesteps some issues like this instead of swinging hard and hitting them with the scrutiny they deserve.
I also think that if she did that (pulled no punches in her interview or commentary) she'd very quickly run out of guests, other than those that agree with her. I'm not saying she should go all Bill O'Reilly and act like a disrespectful prick, but there's no reason why she shouldn't press a little harder with her questions and be a little less timid with her commentary.
Most of the media seems to want to tiptoe around these Left Behind jackasses and their fans, and I see that as just journalistic cowardice, fear of upsetting the fundies.

Re: The Rachel Maddow Show: Apocalypse Now?
In my wide network of friends, relatives, enemies, and well-wishers, I don't know a single person who has read the Left Behind series, and I would bet the majority of them have never even heard of it.
(Of course, were I to do an actual survey of everyone I know, I'd probably be surprised to find that more of them know of, or have even read the series than I would guess.)
I bring this up because I find it very interesting how solipsistic the Culture Wars are... many of us move within circles that tend to hold similar beliefs, and find it hard to believe that anyone rational might believe something different.
Watching these kinds of segments often underscores for me how little I know of the other half of America. It is strange that we are all countrymen, because I often find the Religious Right's beliefs more alien than, say, the beliefs of Kalahari Bushmen... and probably they feel the same.
(And I say all this as a contrarian, centrist Liberal, who frequently is at odds with the more orthodox of my tribe...)

So true mate. Unfortunately though, change only happens for the inside, so you have to be part of those circles in order to affect their beliefs. Oh the irony.
