Re: Marijuana and Driving
HAHAHAHAHA! I have never personally worried about pot and cars. Pot is illegal because it would eventually let blue collar people make their own living again, and we cant have that can we? no no no

Re: Marijuana and Driving
Pot is illegal because it destroys one's drive to be better. Everyone becomes complacent and the world deteriorates.

Re: Marijuana and Driving
I strongly disagree.
From personal anecdote i can say (when i am high on cannabis) I have done more introspection, reflection and evaluation of who I am, what I am doing, and how I can make my life better than when i am sober or drinking alcohol.
I have written more thank you notes, called more friends, done more dishes, and written more emails I never would have written had i not gotten high stopped for a moment to really question my reality.
Even though i no can no longer smoke, because of my family and job, the benefits I had vastly outweighed the negatives. The stereotype that pot-smokers are lazy, complacent, and stagnant is simply not true and persons with that viewpoint are just hanging out with the type of person that would be behaving like that anyway.
I find most pot smokers are in the productive category, and many people who have not yet analyzed themselves, others, and opened their minds to new viewpoints are the complacent ones that cause the world to deteriorate.

Re: Marijuana and Driving
Pot destroys one's drive to be better? Pot's been illegal for less than 100 years. I guess most of human history was just a washout.
You might want to talk to some jazz musicians. I've recently been learning to play and have had a glimpse of the massive amount of study and discipline it takes to become a competent player. And yet it's an art form notorious for it association with marijuana. If pot destroyed people's ambition to improve themselves, jazz simply wouldn't exist.

Re: Marijuana and Driving
I know doctors, lawyers, and many scientists that use and some that even grow their own pot. These are brilliant people.
You could say alcohol "destroys your drive to be better too" But that would also be BS.
If you really think that's why pot is illegal you don't have a very clear understanding of the world.

Re: Marijuana and Driving
Pot was originally made illegal, not for the drug's effects with human consumption but instead it was HEMP that was made illegal. Dupont back in the early 1900s were manufacturing synthetic materials, and they saw hemp as a possible threat to their sales. And so they "lobbied" to get it banned in the U.S. This banned cannabis in any form.
Not too many people, it seems, realize this. Otherwise I don't think it would be taken as seriously as it is now. And you can thank the ignorant public for that. Anti-drug campaigns have done a great job stereotyping and slandering its use (by people that don't even know when marijuana is)
I quit smoking pot a few months ago, basically for the reason you just described. I would reword it a bit: It makes you appreciate the small things. and by that it gives you a huge sense of accomplishment for very small feats, with less motivation to set larger goals.

Re: Marijuana and Driving
Pot doesn't make you complacent. I'm tired of all of these damn stereotypes! No please e-mail me the result of this video; I never seem to watch it to the end.

Re: Marijuana and Driving
I like the evidence-based approach, albeit too small a sample to be considered a highly scientific study. And even with the strong disclaimer at the end, there is potentially the wrong message being sent that small amounts of intoxicants are unlikely to negatively influence one's driving abilities.

Re: Marijuana and Driving
Ok, they admit its not scientific but it does offer a glimpse into driving stoned.
However; imagine a hoopty going on a burn cruise crammed with people juggling a single blunt, the car is filled with a thick cloud of smoke, loud music, and the driver is chatty as fuck and shouting over the music while hardly watching the road... but the damn thing is moving at about 15 mph. ;) Those were fun daze
But the most important thing about driving is knowing WHO is behind the wheel.

This should have been done by the guys at Top Gear, perhaps with Hammond as the guinea pig?

Re: Marijuana and Driving
I'm not ashamed to admit that i smoke pot now and again, i drove ONCE a couple hours after i got high and didn't like the idea that i was doing it, thankfully it was about 2am on empty roads. I don't think this driving "test" they set up should be looking at what the limit is. In my opinion any drug that alters your perception while driving (including alcohol) should have a zero tolerance. There's really no point in having that added risk factor. I've walked 3-4 miles home in biblical storms even though i was offered a lift from my friend who had less than half a joint. Soaked or Dead ? i choose soaked

Re: Marijuana and Driving
It's easy to say we should have zero-tolerance, but it doesn't acknowledge that we have to make reasonable choices about policy. Here's a list of things that might impair your driving skills, listed according to my guesses as to their risk factor:
<oi>

Driving drunk

Driving after one drink (but below the legal limit)

Driving tired

Driving a car full of your rowdy friends

Driving while talking on your cell phone

Driving while trying to get your MP3 player on the right playlist

Driving while angry

Driving while arguing with your girlfriend

Driving in a hurry
</oi>
Assuming this video is correct, where would you put driving while stoned in this list? My guess is that driving tired is much worse, and that even talking on a cell phone is more dangerous, even with a hands-free. So why single out pot for zero-tolerance?
(I should point out that I have a hard time accepting the portrayal of being stoned in this video. I've made the same personal choices about driving or riding in a car with a stoned driver that you have.)

Re: Marijuana and Driving
Oh great, now everyone can see my crappy, non-functional html.
Re: Marijuana and Driving
Personally i think the list should be :
Driving Drunk
Driving tired
Driving stoned
Driving after one drink (below the limit)
Driving while smoking a cigarette
Driving with phone
Messing with MP3/radio
In a Hurry
Arguing with BF/GF
Rowdy friends
Angry
But that's just my opinion.
If I'm giving some one a lift, or have passengers they know how to act in my car or they're WALKING to an ATM to get cash for a taxi (that's right I won't even give them a ride to get cash) I'm not risking my life and the lives of my passengers. Safety first. I may sound up tight but I feel it makes sense.
P.S. I hate "baby on board" signs, but I recently found out they're suppose to be a safety measure in the event of an accident, alerting rescue workers that if they haven't found a baby then they better keep looking. Just thought i'd add that for those who were unaware of this fact as I was

Re: Marijuana and Driving
I've always used the word stoned to explain the mindset I'm in after I've smoked a BUNCH. To me there's a difference between high (after a couple of puffs) and stoned (after a couple bowls). I would say this person had a high tolerance and was only slightly high.
Like buzzed vs. drunk.
I would never have driven stoned. Paranoia in itself is bad for judgment, not to mention I am positive my judgment is extremely impaired by then. I've driven high . . . that's no biggy.
