this was all scripted, I've been watching Letterman forever and he does tons of stuff like this. Letterman just created a funny role for Joaquin Phoenix to play for laughs and publicity. Like Bruce Willis has a wig he always wears when he comes in, and his Late Show writers always play really socially awkward people. Very dry comedy which is the best IMO

Scripted? Watch it again. Letterman is clearly perturbed. This is not the standard "ha-ha" banter that he plays with Bruce Willis and other actors that he's having a fun time with. He's obviously ticked at the fact that Joaquin is completely ill equipped to carry on a meaningful conversation. Dude. This is painful to watch.

Dude. He's playing along . . it's really not that hard, they're professionals buddy. Refer to Crispin Glover's appearence in 1987 (when he acts crazy and letterman looks extremely offended) then in 1990 (when he acts normal) . . . it's just entertainment, and sometimes naive people think it's actually real.
Also refer to Joaquin's previous appearence where him and letterman have a great time. Dude. It's scripted.

The audience laughing really upset me. He's clearly having a hard time, but we're so used to laughing at odd behavior, they assume he's entertaining them. No wonder serious mental illness goes undetected in seriously deficient individuals for as long as does, as often as it does. They joke about the uni-bomber, but, fuck, man, tell me couldn't play the part.

If ya ask me, we need more of this kind of stuff on late-night interviews.

I was exactly thinking of that. Although Crispin admited he was "acting" during his weird interview, i'm not sure about Joaquin.
No matter what, it's true that people should stop mocking anyone's lyfestyle. I guess he doesn't fit on SNL standards where they expect entertaining interview and he was probably like "wh?... dude, that's just a beard, what's wrong with that?". I mean... damn, it's his problem if he wanna stop acting and do hip-hop. what's so wrong or funny about that? I guess the SNL public doesn't know much about humility or the skill required to make a decent hip-hop track.
