Saw this live last night, loved the "Driving Daddy's car" comment. So true.

Re: Chris Matthews reacts to Bush's farewell
Any efforts on behalf of Bush to save his, er, "legacy" have been a spectacular failure and an utter-f*ckup. He's a pathetic loser who loses at everything he does. He's the court jester who made us laugh.

Does that surprise anyone?

Our eyes are on Bush's nepotism and failures. And while we're paying attention to the boy idiot, Cheney silently and cowardly creeps out the side door never to be held accountable for his crimes. Obama hires a NAFTA Clintonian cabinet that is anything but "a change." And Obama's solution to our economic woes are..."let's hand over more tax dollars to the banks and cut more taxes for the rich." No different from the neocons of Bush and Clinton.

Oh, but let's not look at that. Let's look at Bush's follies, eh?

Bush served his purpose. Bush served his purpose well.

You're completely right, of course. However I've never heard Tweety sound so sane.

Is he turning a corner for the next administration? Probably just playing CYA to remain relevant with the D's in office.

Re: Chris Matthews reacts to Bush's farewell
Is anybody besides myself actually suprised that Bush is leaving office? After all, didn't America become a fascist police state? and the executive office became the seat of the new Furer? Wasn't it the Great Gore Vidal who said:

""...George W. Bush has the power to suspend the elections and declare nationwide martial law once this economic crisis worsens. Research the federal reserve and the real reasons behind this economic collapse. Research PDD51 and George Bush’s new dictatorial powers ...""

The only possible answer to this connundrum is that Obama is actually a secret neo-con operative.

Re: Chris Matthews reacts to Bush's farewell
Conundrum? Nah, I can clear it up for ya real quick, Poon. :)

Yes, America has become a fascist police state. And it's only getting worse.

But it's not about Bush. He was just the Publicist in Chief / Executive Jester who made us laugh while the neocons ransacked our homes and treasury.

It's *never* been about Bush. The last eight have been about providing open avenues to corporate plunder (see: the economy) and turning the Office of the President into a "Chief Executive" and "Kingly" position without any checks and balances.

Well, except for the checks provided by the President's Mammon Masters in the corporate and banking and oil powers.

And speaking of those powers? Just look to whom Obama is already paying fealty with his cabinet choices and broken campaign promises. Of course, Obama's a corporatist. We've said that at M&C for over six months...

Re: Chris Matthews reacts to Bush's farewell
What of all this "hope and change" stuff? Are all these millions of Obama fans the new brownshirts? It seems that in a wierd way, Right-wing talk show hosts were right in calling him the "Messiah," albeit mockingly.

It seems that corporate America has figured out a way to lull people into sleep. Have a populist liberal run the show, have people fall in love with him and he can get away with whatever he wants.

Look at how the American left did an about-face on campaign finance when Obama revoked public funding. The most corporate money ever, and progressives actually defended him for it!

This is far more sinister than the Bush administration ever hoped to be. Fat chance to get progressives to protest the Obama administration when he embarks on even greater global capitalism than Bush. We may long for the good ole days of "W" when people were more motivated to speak out.

Kindly speak for yourself. You have this annoying habbit of superimposing your perceptions onto others and setting them up as straw men.

You're not ashamed of your opinion, may I suggest you stick to it and stop placing words in others' mouths?

You disagree with anything myself or Buckingham green has said?

I disagree with your largely antisocial behavior. I stated as such already.

As for the post that I currently respond to, I think it vaguely resembles English.

Are the only masters to government policy the large corporate entities? Not so, although their influence is immense and far beyond that of any others.

Re: Chris Matthews reacts to Bush's farewell
Poon, you're in the ballpark. But I still think you hear what you want to hear.

There's no such thing as "progressives" or "conservatives" or "liberals." At least not in the sense you're talking about. That's just Madison Avenue. Marketing. Selling a "lifestyle."

But it is true that Obama will maintain the global corporate agenda. (The same one followed by previous lackeys like Ike, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush, Clinton...) And, yes, the populace will be much more unlikely to protest Obama...at first.

That's why the baton needed to be passed to a "progressive." Why do you think Romney dropped out? He was the only legit GOP candidate with a real chance, and he knew/was told this wasn't their year.

Why was Romney told to drop out if he could have won? Because even if he had won, any GOP who tried to maintain this corporate agenda would have been crucified in short order by the American people. In fact, if a GOP had "won" in 2008, we might have seen an honest third-party candidate in 2012. Heck, we still might after the horrendous job Cheney, et al pulled on the American people.

For now, however, the corporate agenda needed a, ahem, "Progressive." Albeit one with fantastical private finances behind him. But it'll be very interesting to see how this same media treats Obama two years from now as we head into the 2012 election.

So in the end, I think you're focusing too much on the two nonsensical political parties and the person in office. I'd recommend you stop looking at who's in office. Who cares who's in office? They come and go. Ask yourself - who doesn't come and go? Who stays the same? That's right. The corporate, banking, and industrial powers.

They've stayed the same for hundreds of years and come together in their private clubs like the CFR, Bilderberger, Committee of 300, etc. and then put their money and corporate-owned media behind the candidate who pays them fealty to best support their agenda.

Do you think these folks care about meaningless labels like "GOP" or "Dem?" Please... They let the moronic punters and talk radio listeners and Fox News acolytes argue about "conservatives" and "progressives." The better to divide the people, eh? That's just Coke and Pepsi, man. The difference is nothing these days...

But we'll be longing for Bush? Not a chance, brother. He served his purpose. A little too well... They can't take that path again because *no one* will ever long for the "good ole days of 'W.'" No one.

Perhaps we should start referring to Obama as "The Great Sedater".

Re: Chris Matthews reacts to Bush's farewell
Wow.

Incredibly insightful comments by Matthews. Not even so much about Bush, but about the Middle East.

We need to take time to understand the culture, and why there is so much anger against the West (even pre-invasion, leading up to 9/11).

This notion that you simply bring people democracy and they become Westernized is clearly wrong, and it's refreshing to hear someone like Matthews address that.

The real underlying root lies in the culture(s) of the Middle East, their views about invasion, colonialism, and Western control.

I personally truly believe it also has to do with pride. That the West repeatedly characterizes those cultures as barbaric and backwards, and never really acknowledges that these are the places where civilization began, and where the knowledge and wisdom of Rome, Greece, Persia and India were preserved in Europe's dark ages, and extended into fields like chemistry and mathematics.

Yeah, blowing civilians up is barbaric, clitorectomies are barbaric, stoning is barbaric. But acknowledge their incredible historic contributions, and they may be willing to listen to us. Americans, with our short history, have trouble understanding this. But believe me -- the man on the street in Palestine, or Iraq, or Iran, is quite aware of the cultural legacies of Islam, of the Arabs, and of the Persians (modern day Iranians).

We just need to understand them. Its all just a big misunderstanding. When someone wants to kill me I prefer understanding them by shooting them in the head. If the world doesn't like it, they can come do something about it.
