Re: SNL Digital Short Orchestral Doogie Howser
This isn't one of those things that is actually funny, which one expects(okay, let's be honest, hopes) from SNL. You know how some things are funny as concepts, but once it is fleshed out, the most it does is make you smile. Yeah, this was that.

I will say it was well done, and kudos for that. It's just, this concept really didn't have comedic value. Entertainment value, yes. And yet it leaves me disappointed. Probably because (full circle), one expects SNL to make you laugh out loud. And when it doesn't, its considered a failure.

Maybe my expectations are too high.

If you're expecting SNL to be funny, then I would say yes they are.

Loved that response!

SNL is a shell of what it once was. Still worth an occasional nugget, though.

That said, I honestly never expected this to make it to the front page. Jaxon works in mysterious ways. Praise Jaxon.

Re: SNL Digital Short Orchestral Doogie Howser
I've been watching the DVDs of the first few seasons and I've realized three vital truths about SNL:

1) SNL ALWAYS sucked and was only good for a few laughs per show.

2) Everyone's favorite cast was the cast that was there when they first started watching.

3) That cast sucked too, but we don't remember the bad clips, only the good ones.

Re: SNL Digital Short Orchestral Doogie Howser
There may be some truth to 2, but not in my case. I watched reruns on Comedy Central, and found the early-to-mid 90's cast to be funnier than the mid-90's/early-00's one. It was an unbiased opinion. I guess it could be said that every SNL cast member is a one-trick pony unless they came out of the original cast. This can be said for any of your favorite cast members. Everyone on SNL has their role.

Mike Myers was to either play the straight man in random sketches or be Wayne. That varklemp woman was cute the first time, but lost steam after that.

Adam Sandler was to be the timid character in EVERY FUCKING SKETCH.

Chris Farley threw his weight around. Literally.

David Spade was a C-Class smartass.

Dana Carvey required makeup to be funny.

Jon Lovitz was either the ugly guy or a thespian.

Phil Hartman went from straight man to B-Class Smartass.

Every woman in the early 90's was there to be a woman in the cast.

Kevin Nealon was an A-Class Smartass.

I could go on, but I don't really need to. Everyone on SNL has a role. No matter how multi-talented they may seem, they are one-trick ponies. SNL is still better than MadTV.

Re: SNL Digital Short Orchestral Doogie Howser
Maybe it's just nostalgia. Maybe not. I think that a couple of casts (like in the late 80s, early 90's) were pretty bad. Then there was a resurrection, now it pretty much stinks up the joint. The only thing that saved them this past year was the political commentary and some of that was just awful, like with Governor Patterson wandering about the set.

Re: SNL Digital Short Orchestral Doogie Howser
perhaps the appropriate phrase would have been "one expects SNL to ATTEMPT to make you laugh out loud". Clearly, they don't even try sometimes.

I have not been a fan for more than a decade. However, that being said, I can still HOPE they produce stuff.

Of course, the one thing we must take into account is the 'humor' of the host. My understanding is that the host has final say in all the sketches that are produced.

No appearance by Vinnie Del-Pino (aka. Max Cassella). Was he to busy?
