mutations in the hemoglobin gene result in substituted valine residues (those shiny things) extending outwards from the beta-chains of the molecule. Hydrophobic interactions cause crystalization of the hemoglobin, forming those columns which distort red blood cells and result in ineffecient oxygen transfer.
