The spread of Wal-Mart is somewhat of a phenomenon. Since its birth in Arkansas back in 1962, its worldwide growth has been staggering.
Seeing the American growth plotted out on a map of the U.S. is remarkable to watch.

Re: The Wal-Mart Virus
Well for a small bit of anecdotal evidence, I live in northwestern california and there isn't a walmart for miles around, which is congruent to the map.
The nearest one is in crescent city, which is also congruent to the map.
So based on that bit of info and the stories I have heard of the vast number of them on the east coast and midwest i would say this is accurate.

The first thing I thought when I saw this video on a site that deals with data visualization...
http://flowingdata.com/2008/10/21/code-for-walmart-growth-visualization-now-available/
was that it looked like a virus, but in fact, it looks like any bacterial growth or almost any biological movement.
Look at this video...

it looks to me almost like the microtubule or microfiliment movement inside a cell.
Or this...

We're really just part of a big organism - a God created organism with humans near the top. That's what I say!
Oh, and I hate Walmart. Blech.
