Re: Border
You say that as though every animation needs a message.
If you really need one, I guess it would be "always carry red lipstick"

Re: Border
Yeah, I'll pretty much go along with that statement. Admittedly, this piece is a bit of eye candy and a lot of fluff.
The best animation (and I've said this here in reference to others' submissions) are the ones where content is king (a.k.a. has a strong storyline).

Re: Border
Yes, I'm of the same mindset. That's why even Pixar's oldest animations are still better than some of the junk being produced today. They've always concentrated on story, while marrying it with the best animation and rendering available at the time.
However, some people can go too far with that content driven animations. They try to be too clever, or maybe too trite.
Or worse, offensive for the sake of being offensive and then hide behind the "it's art" or "it is a conversation piece" or such nonsense. For the latter, Robert Maplethorpe, comes to mind.
That being said, just because an animation, or other media, does not have a strong storyline, does not mean it is not worth viewing.
Pretty for sake of pretty can be rather compelling also.

Re: Border
We have this poor, bored sentient creature whose job it is to mind a rarely-used break in the border. When the 2nd character comes along--thinking he can just waltz nonchalantly through, showing no paper work--our protagonist finally has something to do. But when its one role is eliminated--when the break in the line he's guarding is "mended"--the creature's state goes from frustrated/angry to worthless/dejected.
Message here, imho, is something like, some people in society don't play by the rules, and get ahead because they completely disregard the feelings of others.
