Re: Gay Marriage: Dan Savage vs Tony Perkins
Though I dread Voidwar spawning a few hundred comments here, I'm going to echo some other contributors and their comments: How does same sex marriage affect those who are opposed to it?
I have two first cousins (siblings, no less) who are in committed homosexual relationships and have been for decades. Their partners are perfectly decent people. I accept them at family functions and treat them with the respect that we would any other loving relations. Jesus Christ on a whole wheat cracker... these are people who are seeking what every other human being wants. And those who would deny them these rights? They're just insecure and threatened by their own homophobia.

Re: Gay Marriage: Dan Savage vs Tony Perkins
And those who support a gay marriage ban, if you don't want gays getting married in your church, then don't let them marry in your church. It's that simple.
P.S. The United States is not your church.

Is anyone else as surprised as I am that a major news source would have Tony Perkins as their guest given his long, sordid history of White Power, David Duke, Segregation support, etc. People may not like Savage, but he's upfront about his views and background. Tony's history suggests a skinhead in a suit...

Re: Gay Marriage: Dan Savage vs Tony Perkins
Not only that, but that skinhead couldn't even put together a coherent argument without having each claim effortlessly shot down. Yeah, like the interracial marriage precedent is a red herring when looking at homosexual marriage. You just keep telling yourself that, Tony.
Whatever anyone's views on Dan Savage, he handled this little debate well, and kept his facts straight. Interruption sucks, but that's the nature of the format. It'd be nice to see this one longer, with timed speaking slots.

Re: Gay Marriage: Dan Savage vs Tony Perkins
Totally. I think we need to go to timed slots what with adults unable to control themselves these days. This filibustering and interrupting is too much.
But the networks will never go to timed slots. People like Savage with facts, analysis, and reason would eviscerate chimps like Perkins who can only regurgitate empty emotional talking points. They're all the same as Palin.
Ha! And I laughed out loud when Perkins said outmoded laws banning interracial marriage were a, ahem, "red herring." Actually, Tony, that's what we in the real world call a "valid point." Now answer. Can't do it? Hmm. Well, then keep flailing all around, I guess...

Re: Gay Marriage: Dan Savage vs Tony Perkins
It's not that adults can't control themselves (though many can't). It's that television tries to cram too much into compressed time. It forces everybody to use slogans and ideas that are already familiar to most viewers. If you try to say something that's requires even a slight explanation or a moment's reflection, you won't be able to make sense in the time allotted. And if you don't interrupt the other guy, he'll just talk more than you.
Unscripted TV usually sucks unless it can sprawl a little bit over time.

Re: Gay Marriage: Dan Savage vs Tony Perkins
That's a very good point. Topics people used to discuss for 30 or 60 minutes are now jammed into a 3 minute clip. And as soon as someone takes a moment to thoughtfully respond (or even breathe), it's seen as a sign of weakness or an opportunity for someone else to ramrod repeated emotionally-driven pre-written talking points. Very frustrating. And it only diminishes the last vestiges of intellectual debate. Up next, Running Man Court TV...
Re: Gay Marriage: Dan Savage vs Tony Perkins
Though I support gay marriage I actually (as painful as this is) agree with Tony on the red herring point. How exactly is woman/man marriage the same as same sex marriage? You can't have it both ways. If I am "colour blind" and don't give two shits about the colour of a man or woman's skin in a heterosexual marriage how does this have anything to do with a homosexual marriage? Are there not about ten thousand variables different with that situation?!?

I think, in a way, you just proved Dan Savage's point perfectly.

Re: Gay Marriage: Dan Savage vs Tony Perkins
It's a precedent with a very good fit to this situation. There was a time when interracial marriage was legislated against by some states in the U.S. Those state laws were overruled in 1967 by the U.S. Supreme Court's interpretation of the federal constitution.
What makes this case different is that Prop 8 creates an amendment to the California constitution, and prior to Prop 8's passage, the California constitution was ruled by the California Supreme Court to overrule anti-homosexual marriage laws in the state. There is now an open legal question as to whether such a constitutional amendment violates either the federal constitution, or other provisions of the state constitution. And a lawsuit challenging its validity was filed shortly after election day.
Doesn't sound like a red herring to me.

Re: Gay Marriage: Dan Savage vs Tony Perkins
Me too, fella. Ignorant and oppressive people, like that, really make me wish I cared less about going to jail. Sure would be fun to hit such people, though. I imagine it would be a wonderful feeling. The kind of wonderful feeling that makes you smile. Smile because you know it is truly your happiest thought.
Wow... I'm tempted to go beat up the next Mormon I see. Why not? Solutions only remove the excitement; and, besides, violence makes us all feel better when we're frustrated or blue.
World is always going to have stupid people. So...
Let's just allow street brawls to settle shit? Why not? It'd be great! The victors could decide what stupid laws we get. No more of this petty back and forth BS. That'd be over and done with when one group or individual walks away. Gay marriage? That would be finally sorted out, I'll tell ya.
My bet would surprisingly go to the gays. Not because I know their argument is rock solid - so long as a church is never forced to marry anyone - but because I know there is no fucking way gays would blow off a 'last man standing' competition. (or an episode of Will & Grace... or a Madonna concert)
Of course, i cannot say what lesbians would do. Though, I've seen some rather mean looking butches before. A few that I can say I'd never wish to meet in a dark alley ... or the video I'm currently downloading (I <3 bittorrent)
As for the Faithful flock o' da Lord, I'm guessing that their most hateful are also, deep down, just a bunch of repressed homosexuals. So that means, most likely, in the heat of manly encounter, those hater-sissies will all switch to the gay side.
Gays for the win.

The only thing stupider than what Tony Perkins has to say, is Tony Perkin's hair.

Re: Gay Marriage: Dan Savage vs Tony Perkins
Dan Savage is the fucking man.
He is by far the most coherent, intelligible, intelligent, clever, quick-witted pundit/guest/special correspondent, whatever you want to call him, he brings it every time.
He even managed to out-funny Stephen Colbert just days ago, which is legendary in itself.
He's here, he's queer, get used to looking like an idiot if you're debating him.

Is being a Mormon a choice? Or are you born that way?
Re: Gay Marriage: Dan Savage vs Tony Perkins
Oh, and p.p.s.? Our economy is an unstoppable sinkhole ripping apart the very fabric of our nation. If we don't come together as a unified people, we will not make it.
Who gives a sh!t if two men or two women get married.
If we follow the money and come together, we won't be fooled again.
