Not Working?
In 1991, did CNN film a fake news segment from "Iraq" - which, in reality, was nothing more than a television studio?
Was this segment and what appears to be a fake televised bombing as staged as FEMA's faux press conference of 2007?
Watch this video and decide for yourself.

Re: Does the Mass Media Lie?
Sadly, no. Not exactly sure what it is.
The journalist on this video is Charles Jaco. He's legit. A longtime newsman who used to work for CNN and is currently employed by Fox.
This video was recently unearthed, and no major news sources are touching it, obviously.
It's kind of a mystery right now.

Re: Does the Mass Media Lie?
Er, "legit newsman" may not exactly apply to Charles Jaco any more -- not after this video anyway.
Re: Does the Mass Media Lie?
yeah...um...he's in a hotel. He say's that he's in a hotel. That's why it's not natural lighting, because it was hotel lighting. That's why the sound quality is so good, because it was a direct land line in a hotel. Those bushes look fake because they are just fake bushes in a hotel. I could understand your confusion, that they faked a newscast from the Euphrates by filming it in a studio, except that THEY SID THEY WERE IN A HOTEL! Sorry, but try to pay a little attention before you accuse a network from back when they were actually great and respected.

Re: Does the Mass Media Lie?
:) Settle down, ALLCAPS... We know it's purportedly at a hotel. You're not breaking any news here by telling us what we already know.
The question (psst...which is, um, how you say, "different" from an accusation?) is whether this set was faked to include the highly suspect "bombing raid."
The fact that a bombing doesn't phase the cameraman, the "sending out for lunch" in the middle of air raids, and the lack of gear on these guys seem the most suspect after the "bombing." But I'd agree that it's still hard to say...
I agree with below. The newscast does look like a training video except for that CNN actually aired it. Weird to be sure.

Re: Does the Mass Media Lie?
fine, the all caps was too much, but the video commentary doesn't admit that it was in a hotel, it takes the time to point out that there was a doorknob behind the bush, as though it was supposed to actually be outside and not in, how do you say, a studio, which the video repeatedly claims.
And, if you watched the video, they explain, it was not a bombing raid, the just smell the exhaust from a departing rocket and got scared.
There is nothing weird going on, it was just some reporters over reacting, and then having some fun.

Re: Does the Mass Media Lie?
"Right now we have once again been surprised with the unexpected: an air raid. An apparent attack. Although we can't say what the outgoing missiles hit..." - Charles Jaco
:) So... Hmm. That wasn't him just talking about a raid on this very clip?
Hey, seriously, thanks for responding. I appreciate your time. But like with this example, you lose credibility when you tell other people they need to watch the video - all the while you keep missing these details, making assumptions, resorting to histrionics...
Uh...what's that about the Euphrates again? :)
Feel free to use whatever label on raids you like. It doesn't matter. If they're talking about an air raid and smelling rocket exhaust, they're talking about missiles flyin' overhead. And outgoing can always mean incoming...
Now that said, my repeating of CNN's scenario for you doesn't magically determine whether this clip is real or faked in a studio. This is simply the scene CNN presents.
Which brings us to your concern that the editor of "the video commentary doesn't admit that it was in a hotel." Ah ha...very Perry Mason... The editor didn't admit it? What!? Throw the book at him! :) But he didn't "admit that it was in a hotel" for a very good reason.
He doesn't believe it.
Yeah... You do realize that's the crux of the editor's point, right? :) And just because you happen to disagree with the editor doesn't somehow make his position false. That'd be illogical. Unless you actually had something to show us other than ALL CAPS or simply repeating unsubstantiated opinions.
And conversely, this doesn't mean the editor is right either. Both of you are on opposite ends and are equally convinced of your positions.
So ultimately, people need to watch and decide for themselves. And it's not surprising that Americans are more skeptical of their media than ever before.
Whether it's last year's fake news conference with FEMA getting caught or CNN admitting they knew Palin and McCain were fighting but couldn't tell the public until after the election - the American people are growing ever more distrustful of corporate media.
But all that said, with all that's going on with this specific clip, I'm honestly not sure myself. Something is definitely weird.
And if you disagree? That's cool. Believe in whatever you want. Feel free to respond and set me right. And thanks again for the lively debate.

Re: Does the Mass Media Lie?
The fact that two differing points of view exist does not mean they are equivalent. The editor is making an extraordinary claim based on laughably weak evidence. He simply hunts for apparent anomalies based on his own ignorant assumptions of what the footage *should* look like.
Yes, it looks artificially lit... Because it WAS artificially lit. Yes, it looks like it was taped in a studio... Because it WAS taped in a makeshift studio which they built under canopies outside the hotel. (Google for pictures and see for yourself.)
But there's no convincing a True Believer... You cannot reason someone out of a belief that they did not reason themselves into in the first place.

"Unless you actually had something to show us other than ALL CAPS or simply repeating unsubstantiated opinions. " - Some Guy
The video uses all caps at certain points and is nothing but unsubstantiated opinions. If we were discussing the state of CNN today, I might agree with their BS, but this is an accusation (and that word really shouldn't be controversial, unless you will really allow the editor to hide behind a question mark at the end, in which case, "you are a tool of miseducated conspiracy theorists?") of a 1991 report, when CNN was respected. There's nothing here except a fool harping on about the magical appearance of doorknobs, and about how you are supposed to act when there are missiles over head. It's not that he doesn't believe that they are in a hotel, he thinks that they are pretending to be outside in a forest or something where walls and doorknobs don't exist. My problem is that people actually believe this stuff and ignore the real problems with the media.

Re: Does the Mass Media Lie?
Actually, that's wrong. The editor doesn't seem to think CNN is saying this was shot in a forest. A forest in Saudi Arabia... :)
He heard CNN say it was a hotel just like everybody did. The issue is that editor simply doesn't believe it. Just as you do believe it. Which is totally cool. Like the comment above astutely stated, True Believers of every opinion believe they themselves understand the issue better than anyone...no matter the facts. Even if they have wacky videos or miss things like raids and or make assumptions like the forest.
That said, your view is quite possibly the right one. But I suppose we'll just have to leave it that you truly believe in CNN while I think something seems odd but am not really sure. And that's okay... :) But honestly, I'm sorry if anything seemed personal.
"Some Guy" :)
p.s. Hey, what are the real probs with the media? That's an interesting topic of its own if you're open to keeping down this path.

Re: Does the Mass Media Lie?
For the record, I came back to see if drunkboat responded to his comment about the "real problems" with the media. It appears that drunkboat joined Milk & Cookies to respond to this very thread. And this thread only.
He never commented on any other videos. He never uploaded any links. He never even voted for a single clip...
drunkboat seems to have specifically signed up with M&C to comment on this video and this video alone. And then he disappeared.
And when asked to clarify the "real problems" with the media? He fell silent.
drunkboat had a very specific agenda. Which now makes this clip seem even more strange. Why would some "random citizen" attack it so virulently and then disappear? Even if he were to come back after this comment, it would appear he's monitoring it. Which would be even stranger...
I've heard that drunkboat actually convinced some folks that there *is* something going on with CNN in this video. That his rabid emotional response seemed to indicate an agenda in-tune with cointelpro. Me, I'm not totally sure. But given his specific targeting of this video, it could very well be...

Re: Does the Mass Media Lie?
wow...just, wow... I never realized that i was a tool of the 'cointelpro'.
or it could be that I saw a poorly drawn argument of a video and decided to comment on it.
The real problems of the media are evident to anyone who watches the 24 hour news, they are ratings centric edu-tainments, that are incapable of really imparting the news.
look, none of that means anything, we can't change that, all i want to do is punch holes in a bad thesis, but didn't look at the comments for a week, hoping that someone would say something substantial.
Every time I make a point, the standard response is to say that the video editor already said that. When I say that it was a hotel, you say, He knows that they said it was a hotel, he just doesn't believe that. Just answer me this, this one question, if he acknowledges that they claim it's a hotel, but doesn't believe it himself, why does he mention that there is a doorknob behind the bush? Are doorknobs forbidden in Kuwait?
I can't wait to hear how he never says that there shouldn't be a doorknob, or so blah blah blah

And, I want to know why you cut out during the hotel video. I call shenanigans on this video.
Shenanigans!
Would an anonymous internet video editor lie to us?

Re: Does the Mass Media Lie?
For the record, I hate that word, too. I'm with you. It's far too smug and condescending. I don't know who added that lame bumper.
I was going to recommend people ignore it. But I knew most folks on M&C don't take this kind of thing personally. Especially when there seems to be something interesting going on.

I've loved it ever since the scion commercial used it, then I knew it was cool and that I should use the word more. Yah sheeple!!
