Was it offensive? I'm not familiar with the phrase Uncle Tom, and I'm not black so I don't know how out of line this was.
Re: Nader on Obama: Uncle Sam or Uncle Tom?
Answers.com says Uncle Tom means a "black person who is regarded as being humiliatingly subservient or deferential to white people. . . "

Re: Nader on Obama: Uncle Sam or Uncle Tom?
Most Americans share at least three characteristics: they're dumb, easily offended, and aren't interested in the truth nor have any respect for it. Nader, in my opinion, is perfectly right. Too bad he didn't tell what he really thinks of Obama, but no doubt wise of him.

Re: Nader on Obama: Uncle Sam or Uncle Tom?
what if its black people who get offended?
Would you be willing to call black people "dumb" if they get offended when people call them "uncle tom"?

That's precisely the mentality that pretends that race isn't a factor in America still. Out of sight, out of mind.
There were always field slaves and house slaves, "Uncle Toms", and to pretend that there aren't equivalent parallels today is willful naivety or utter ignorance.
To characterize Ralph Nader as being racist for bringing up racial issues is to try to negate the issue. Race still, and most likely always will, play a role in the eyes of EVERYONE.
I voted for Obama but for the entire election campaign I was disturbed that not once did he mention the poor, black, latino, white, asian, or native americans living in America today.
"Class" is the new term for "Race" and to pose the question as to whether or not Obama will decrease the size of the lower class or not is a question of vital importance that needs to be asked.
It's easy to ignore race when your identity isn't defined for you in a negative light on a daily basis.

Re: Nader on Obama: Uncle Sam or Uncle Tom?
The entire point of this clip is this: Ralph Nader and Ron Paul and lots of others...they are truth-telling gadflies, with penetrating insight---------and absolutely no tact.
EVEN IF HE'S RIGHT OVERALL, asking if Obama will be an 'Uncle Tom' for corporations is an off-the-charts faux pas......and on the very night he is elected, no less!
This is why Ron Paul/Al Sharpton/Ross Perot/Bob Barr/Ralph Nader/ETCETC will never come close to presidency: they don't realize that successful politics requires TACT.
Most of these 'third party' types rose to fame by taking controversial but solid stances. Well, that makes for a great commentator, activist, tv show host, writer------but a horrible politician.
