Though I am not particularly happy to see him getting a freebie 23 minute soapbox, it's good to see that he doesn't have to *always* act like a curmudgeonly fellow.

McCain's Campaign for the White House can best be compared to a runaway train that's zipping along rails made of slippery lies. Up ahead, a dark something looms ever nearer. McCain can't quite make out what that dark something is. Boy, is he lucky he can't!

Re: David Letterman: Sen John McCain Full Interview
Very well put. I would love to see the numbers comparing those that watched the debate the night before and those that watched this segment.

I wonder how many of those that weren't in Obama's camp before watching this would shift over. McCain quite obviously told some flat out lies...again. And tried to gloss over embarrassing things that he had no answer for...again.

Gotta give him some credit, it would take a hefty set of balls to show up on Letterman's show after the stunt he pulled and relentless assault in the interim.

I would argue that, more or less, any mainstream candidate's campaign for the White House is "a runaway train that's zipping along rails made of slippery lies." I'm not impressed by either party enough to want to cast a vote in either direction.

Re: David Letterman: Sen John McCain Full Interview
There's a great posting on another video blog (OK, it's Crooksandliars.com), that I just have to approximately quote here: "Letterman looks more presidential than McCain". Looking at the old man getting caught in a crossfire of his own lies and contradictions, slowly and painfully waffling around multiple answers until deciding upon the "official version", I felt terribly sorry for McCain.

Sorry that he put himself on the pedestal of presidential contention. Sorry that he's been powerless while his campaign spiraled out of control into fear-mongering (what did Master Yoda say about the road that begins with fear?) and empty rhetoric. Sorry that he's flip-flopped on most issues to appease a Bush administration that brutally smeared him back in the first half of 2000 (the last time I rooted for the Arizona senator), because he thought it would advance his career opportunities, somewhat like Hillary Clinton voting for the Iraq resolution.

I've never hated the man, but he does not deserve your vote, only our sympathy as you do your patriotic duty come November and take your country towards a saner, more progressive direction.

Also, it's time to show the Karl Roves (and most importantly, their employers) of the world that their fucked up tactics are not foolproof and may in fact backfire horribly. Maybe my main wish this year is for the full-throttle Karl Rove gospel and its' flock to fade into oblivion.

Rove will write a couple of books and fade into the sunset just like his mentor Lee Atwater did.

I so very much agree with you about the sadness of McCain turning into the GOP stooge. He deserved better. I suspect he'll have a press conference on November 5th and make a big apology. This might move the US forward in a way that we've not seen in several decades. Just a mindless hope of mine, I guess.

No, that's a fantastic hope! And you know what? Year 2000 McCain would have held that press conference on Nov 5th. Let's hope that McCain finds his way back home.

It's still alive. You'll have to wade through a commercial first, but it is there.

Nope. I waded through the commercial only to be greeted with the youtube "black screen of death" that tells me the video is gone. At least they're sorry about it....

No, it is very much alive. The funny thing is that the commercial and the interview are being played at the same time, so I press Pause during the commercial, which means the interview is paused and the commercial keeps on playing. Yes, it's very weird. When the commercial is over, the interview automatically starts to play. My location: Holland.

Re: David Letterman: Sen John McCain Full Interview
Am I getting this wrong or is entertainment/show business becoming awkward...I mean...hey...Letterman obviously could not slam this dude as much as he would any other celebrity...just because of that political sensitivity. Don’t get me wrong...Dave did great balancing on very fine line...but...it gives wrong impression. It was just fkng entertaining...for some people it will bring impression: "It’s cool...maybe McCain is not that bad after all..."

I don’t know...it is weird....that fine line....

Re: David Letterman: Sen John McCain Full Interview
Finally, someone had the balls to ask McCain about his palling around with G. Gordon Liddy. After the ridiculous attacks against Obama for his past work with Bill Ayers, it took a late night comedian, David Letterman, to give tit for tat. McCain actually was close with and supportive of Liddy and Liddy has endorsed McCain, contributed to his campaingn and held fund raiser dinners for him. The cartoonists and comedians often do a better job of keeping us informed and of analyzing what's going on with politics than the news media. Kudos to Letterman for asking McCain what I've been waiting to hear. And, amazingly, the "serious" news media just pretended it never happened.

Love the subtle jibe of the band playing "Can't Explain" during the opening...

McCain is very likeable when he's relaxed (which is why the media has always adored him until the current campaign), but he's neither a "maverick" nor does he have much integrity left.

I very much hope that he (and esp. Palin) do not get elected.

But I do hope he remains Senator. He is interesting and useful in that role. But he would make a terrible President.

Just want to add: as with Jon Stewart, I actually think these high profile comedian talk show hosts do a better job of interviewing politicians than journalists. Like the fool in the emperor's court, they are more free to point out who is wearing clothes and who isn't.
