I got to talk to him a few times (kind of). Joan Woodward was a regular at the restaurant I waited tables at. He'd come in every few weeks. Definitely the most polite customer I ever had at that place.

Re: Road To Perdition - Shootout
Always interested in 1930s era crime dramas. Such an interesting time for America: prohibition, the (last) depression, overnight fortunes made, woman left the house on their own, Thompson machine guns, old car, cool suits, jazz, deco... fuck I love it.

A few years ago I tried to make an fps modification which sent players into a section of a prohibition era city, so they could slug and shoot it out for all it's riches. The setup for the game's multi-player was to have three opposing teams: Feds, Irish and Italians. If you were Irish or Italian, you were a gang. Which meant your objectives were to work with other member of your gang to (a) earn money for the gang, while (b) hindering the other gangs ability and also (c) keeping the Feds out of your affairs.

Yet if your were a Fed, you'd be changed with a variety of missions which all focus on hindering the progression of both gangs: raid distills, makes arrests, hunt down public enemies, collect evidence etc (trust me, it all made sense with the gameplay).

The other unique thing about this game concept; was that players had to constantly be mindful of the consequences to the level of force they choose to apply. To be more specific, a player had to decide if they wanted to fist fight an opponent; use a knife or blunt object... or a gun. Now, a gun would trumping everything - naturally - but it could also draws cops (blue uniformed Bots that operate independently - and cause trouble for gang members, if provoked) and offers no benefits to the killer if the victim was 'not carrying' (unarmed at the time).

Basically, players want to fight fair to gain respect (power) and leave the dirty fighting for when it suits their ends. Knowing where to draw the line is partly how a player could define his/her personality within the game; they code follow they're own code.

Ahh. There are heaps more to the game... but... most people find game design rather boring. So, I'll button it (besides, it's off topic)

... hah ... one word of (unasked for) advice: don't treat the ; as a . or , or :

For some reason, your fingers (or at least one of them) have fallen in love with the semicolon.

This was part 3 of the ongoing series W_W Teaches EM to Write Well.

I admit this latest comment of yours is mostly devoid of ; use, but some of your previous comments are literally swarming with them, which is good -- if used well.

Re: Road To Perdition - Shootout
Too true. I try, but often fail to understand correct gamer. Irks me that I remain so ignorant and lazy about it. ERRR.

When it's casual writing, like here, I think the rules can be bent somewhat. But, quality sentence structure is still much better for the poor reader. Gotcha.

Thanks for the feedback. Gives me something to work on. I'll add it to the pile ;)
