Penn & Teller Bullshit: Prostitution
Aired April 10, 2006. RT 28:58. Season 4, Episode 2.

Everyone knows that prostitution is practiced throughout the land. Where it is legal - in only a few Nevada counties, prostitution is vigorously regulated and monitored by the State of Nevada Health Department. The women submit to compulsory medical tests for STDs. No one is forced to work as a prostitute. Pimps don't exist. HIV has never been detected. The women earn regular paychecks and tips. Some even get vacation and sick days. And they pay taxes! It's BULLSHIT that it's illegal for two consenting adults to have sex with each other!

Yup. CBS Video produces them. Showtime is a Viacom property, same as CBS.

Re: Penn & Teller Bullshit: Prostitution
I've no problems with with people doing what they actually want to do but P&T are fairly far off the mark on this one.. I guess it's different in the US but in the UK these folks...

... sure could use a break out program, they aren't having a whole lot of fun and at the moment all they have to look forward to is prison or death.

Sorry to be a buzz kill.

Re: Penn & Teller Bullshit: Prostitution
Sorry, you missed the point. The ladies in that link you mentioned are living testament to the existence of certain problems in society. They are a symptom and not the problem itself. Let me put it this way, if the UK legalized prostitution you won't suddenly see the streets swarming with desperate women selling their bodies. Feel free to disagree, but I urge you to view the video again and listen to the points Penn and Teller make. You'll come to the conclusion that they're right.

Here in the Netherlands prostitution is legal; if you happen to run into prostitutes on the street, chances are they're on drugs, and have been driven to their current situation. Those women need help -- and by help I don't mean one euro and a pat on the ass.

Yeah you have a point - I watched it again and while I still can't agree with everything they say, the general jist of their message has got through and been understood.

Thanks chap.

Re: Penn & Teller Bullshit: Prostitution
Yeah, the main point seems to be that making prostitution illegal causes more problems than it solves.

Re: Penn & Teller Bullshit: Prostitution
Seems like where prostitution is illegal, there are hordes of drug-addicted woman selling their bodies for the drugs they crave. VERY sad.

However, as much as those 10 counties in Nevada can boast about the weekly health screenings of the women for STD's... do you think any of those women are tested for drugs? I'd suspect that, while the percentage is probably much lower, there's still a demographic of women who are working at a brothel so they can feed a drug habit of some form or another.

I would wager the "young student with a great self-image, putting herself through school" prostitute is more the exception than the norm, even in Nevada's legal cathouses.

Re: Penn & Teller Bullshit: Prostitution
Yeah, well, that's what happens when drugs are illegal.

It'd be nice to have decent drug treatment, and no hugely profitable black market for adulterated cocaine controlled by violent street gangs. We all saw what happened when the U.S. outlawed alcohol in the 1920s.

We should outlaw all forms of booze and cigarette advertising, while keeping those drugs legal, taxed, and under restricted use. Ditto for all street drugs. There should be no market for pushers.

Re: Penn & Teller Bullshit: Prostitution
I think that if you had to drastically oversimplify the reason why prostitution is prohibited, you could just point to religion. Religion, of course, is all about social control.

And by the way - if an escort has sex with people to get money to pay for school, does that make it "prostituition"?

Re: Penn & Teller Bullshit: Prostitution
Well... yes.

I think your question should have been "is it wrong?"

Re: Penn & Teller Bullshit: Prostitution
No, actually, I was combining the words "prostitution" and "tuition".

But I suspected it might easily be overlooked, or mistaken for a typo.
