"The Bronze Warrior", a chapter in the of the PBS American Experience series "The Presidents" gives a nine minute treatment of the 1960 Presidential race between Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy. These were the first debate ever between presidential candidates in the United States, televised or otherwise. Nixon was the favorite going in, but ended up losing the election by a narrow margin and suspicion of electoral fraud.
The first Kennedy/Nixon debate is often cited to underscore the power of television in modern elections. Polls taken afterward indicated the radio audience tended to asses Nixon as the winner, while television audiences polled the reverse.
Takehome lesson: Always wear makeup, but don't get caught applying it on camera.

Re: 1960 Nixon vs. Kennedy Debate.
Why is Nixon meeting face to face with a leader of the Soviet Union? Weren't there pre-conditions? Why didn't he send his secretary of state? That must mean that Nixon AGREED 100% with the Soviet commies. ;-)
