But there truly is an effort for large corporations to transcend the outdated nation state model and become a multinational power too large to be taxed or controlled by any one country.

Financially, it's more attractive for them. And financial and industrial folks like Bilderberg members support politicians who espouse and legislate towards this world-view. Just like with Clinton, a Bilderberg member, and his troubling support of NAFTA. :)

That said - it's all really less shadowing than some nuts would have you believe. But that doesn't make it any less damaging to the regular prols like you and me.
