Re: Henry Rollins Letter to Woody Allen
I'm not a big fan of Woody Allen films (a couple), but I agree that Hollywood films typically sucks serious cockage.
Rollins is far too optimistic that people will one day wake up and realize that special effects spectacles, like Transporter 2 or Transformers, are really just for children and dullards. Most people aren't sophisticated enough to appreciate clever writing anymore. They'd rather just see impressive CGI and important names next to the title.
Truth is - Art is for artists, and the movie industry is for those who just want simple, fast entertainment. Only a pretentious douche would actually try to bring taste to someone who goes to see a movie like the Mummy 3. I mean, seriously. Please. The kind of person who pays $10 to see a Mummy movie is not someone who gives a flying fuck about plot or good acting or plausibility or originality or suspension of disbelief or clever wordplay or subtlety or any other quality that makes a movie watchable for longer than five minute.
Producers do not look at a movie's projected success over many years. No, they look at what they can make back as quickly as possible. Why do they do this? Because it's a business and, in business, you have to make the most practical decisions if you ever want a ROI... which would allow you to continue doing business.
Artists, who want to express themselves via cinema, need go stroke-off with a cheap video camera. That way, they can show their expression to other artists at a thing called an Indie Film Festival.

Re: the pretentious douche and his hatred of zeitgeist
Nope. Most of us can appreciate various forms of art for what they are. Justin Timberlake isn't supposed to be This Mortal Coil. The comic Milk and Cheese has nothing to do with Maus. And you'll find a lot of crossover among folks who have seen Transformers and My Left Foot or Eraserhead.
And could you guys please stop perpetuating the false notion that it takes no sweat or artistry to create good CG. Art is pervasive here on Earth in all of our dealings. And this idea of it not turning a profit is relatively new.
Thanks,

Re: the pretentious douche and his hatred of zeitgeist
Didn't I see Hank in Bad Boys 2? I'm sure I did... saw him each of the four times I watched it. Awesome movie. It's up there with the Rundown.
I would very much like to be a snob, but my love of the low arts will not allow it.
