Pat Condell: Take Your God and Shove Him
With all due respect.

Seriously, why are Atheists so BORING? I mean, I resent religion as much as the next sensible person, but fighting it with sarcasm and contempt doesn't seem to be helping the cause.

I'm of the opinion that a number of actions and ideas believers have about their faith and society in general should be met with outright hostility. Not violence, but opposition. I'm more willing to try and persuade the less fundamental believers, but the real hardballs? Nothing much more than ridicule seems to have any effect.

Re: Pat Condell: Take Your God and Shove Him
I ardently hold the same opinion as you. Religion deserves nothing more than a constant and thorough ridicule.

Though, my only aim with ridiculing the "hardballs" is to satisfy my own desire for seeing their distress. I attribute this bad attitude to the fact that I'm a mean-spirited jerk who derives a measure joy from seeing bible fanatics get all busted up by my blasphemous remarks, and not because I am under some delusion that these morons will ever forgo the invisible light to come to the land of reason. Fat chance of that happening from an atheist's blog comment.

As I've learned, it can be quite satisfying to take the piss at things that are stupid and pathetic (ever barked at an angry kick-dog trapped inside a car? Surprisingly fun for a few seconds).

Besides, religion is always such an easy target. Oh my Dog. It's like shooting a monkey in a barrel: every shot is bound to be a hit.

Sure, it's not nice to insult people... to attack the thing they hold most dear... but then again, there's absolutely no real harm in being openly critical; even if you're rude about it. So what. Words have only as much power as a person wishes them to have.

You put it well: "Not violence, but opposition."

It is presumptuous to hate all religions.

I think it is safe to say that you are not familiar with all religions, if you were I don't think you would have such an extreme stance.

For the record one can be an religious and an atheist. The two are not mutually exclusive.

"It is presumptuous to hate all religions."

I just hate some and dislike the rest.

"I think it is safe to say that you are not familiar with all religions, if you were I don't think you would have such an extreme stance."

Why would I want to waste time learning about Buddhism or Zoroastrianism or Paganism or Cthulhuism... or what have you? What would I learn? That they are all built on deception? News flash: I already figured that.

"For the record one can be an religious and an atheist."

You mean agnostic.

"The two are not mutually exclusive."

So, they're like my balls then. Separate, but not. Trapped within the same skin sack.

Re: Pat Condell: Take Your God and Shove Him
I think the distinction DaveoftheRave is trying to make is that of religion and faith, that these are two separate entities. One might say that faith is just the belief there is a god, while being religious is participating in any number of worship activities or behaving a certain way or dressing a certain way. I understand this distinction, but I don't agree with it. I think that when people believe in a god, their behavior (whether following religious custom or not) is the direct result of that. I can say I dislike religious people and still cover the whole spectrum (just believers and then those who consider themselves Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, etc.) because one needs necessarily have faith to be religious.

Re: Pat Condell: Take Your God and Shove Him
I can't think of a single religion that states that it is OK not to believe in God. You can go through the motions of a religious person, but an important factor in every religion that I know of is that you have faith that at least on God exists.

Unless you know of a religion that doesn't believe in God or that states that belief in God isn't important. In which case, I'm more than willing to concede the point.

Boring compared to who? Theists? Ancient dogma?

I'm of the opinion that no matter what your stance on religion, the atheists are certainly more interesting.

Re: Pat Condell: Take Your God and Shove Him
I find the theists are more interesting, actually. I mean, how can people believe most of that ludicrous garbage? We live in the year 2008! Anyone who lives in a developed country, like Europe or North America, should be informed. What mental will it must require to hold onto primitive belief structures; what a defiance of reason in an information age. Truly astounding.

I tell ya, it's the theists that are the most mysterious and difficult to figure out. Compared to those dingbats, we're rather dull. We're too busy pondering the big question... or living freely.... or having unnatural sex (ok, that can be interesting).

Meanwhile, theists are out there supporting presidents who spout shitty propaganda, making life harder for homosexuals and other peeps that do not share their faith... and looking for ways to spread their message of BS.

Yes. Theists for the win. They help make life a whole lot more interesting.

Re: Pat Condell: Take Your God and Shove Him
I dunno. I find people following ancient dogma to be kind of boring. I'm not particularly enthralled by the masses trying to maintain the status quo. I do, however, understand why you find them intriguing. Different folks, different strokes.

as usual, pat puts it best (starting at RT 3:30)
"whenever i'm exposed to <pat condell> i feel dirty. i feel contaminated by vileness of the mealymouthed platitudes that pass for wisdom, the naked money-grubbing, the controlling rhetoric devoid of any humanity of compassion--are you kidding me? the supercilious hectoring tone, the constant, intrusive demands for privilege, and the absolutely unforgiveable violation of the minds of <viewers>..."

...and i think this person who makes a profession of inane, crotchety rants is the scum of the earth. and i think that if my fellow atheists were to wake up tomorrow, they would agree with me.
