I agree on his religious stances but Bill Maher is a huge douchbag.
Oh and he is a prominent member of PETA.

Ya. Bill strikes me as one to enjoy his own gas. That smug sarcastic look that spreads over his mug every time someone asks him a stupid question is a dead giveaway.
I don't hold that against him though. A self approving, know-it-all demeanor is necessary for someone in his line of work (as he points out in the interview).
Besides, Maher often has to share space with nutjobs and dingbats. With a mind as clever as his, it's silly to think he could or should remain humble. No one wants him to be, anyway. He's more fun this way; more entertaining. He'd be dull as shit if he played the humble angle.
Besides, I've always found that approach is much douchier. Better to jump into the trenches and get dirty with the imperfections of the human condition, I say. Let people know your being natural; not trying to hide your imperfections.
As for his membership in PETA, I think that is a noble gesture. Sure, I like cute little kittens and puppies too. However, the reality is that PETA are - for the most part - a bunch of wackos. Through the years, many of their members have supported such a sweeping description.
Hmmm... I'll bet Maher just joined PETA for the poon. Seeing as how the organization attracts typical wet blankets who love animals too much, and how every woman loves animals too much, Bill must get laid after every rally. The bastard.

The PETA girls really go for someone with a head of hair that looks like an animal licked it all morning.
