Bill Withers: Ain't No Sunshine
Bill Withers in 1971.

From his 1971 album Just As I Am. The song was released as a single in September 1971 and became a breakthrough hit for Withers, reaching number six on the U.S. R&B chart and number three on the U.S. Pop chart. Withers was still working at a factory that made toilet seats for 747s when he recorded the song. He originally intended to write more lyrics for the part of the song where he repeats the phrase "I know" twenty-six times, but the other musicians told him to leave it. "I was this factory worker puttering around", Withers said. "So when they said to leave it like that, I left it."[1] "Ain't No Sunshine" is ranked 280th on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

And quoted in many many more tunes. One I thought of off the top of my head is the Superman Symphony (Red Cape Tango movement) by Michael Daugherty.

(I think I spelled that right, I didn't check)

Da nada, glad to share.

What's funny is that this song just popped into my head as the skies turned black and were about to open up. So I did a quick search on it, immediately thought Withers was a one-hit wonder. Turns out he had a few in the Rolling Stone top 500 of all time.

Re: Bill Withers: Ain't No Sunshine
I think it's funny that R&B used to really sound like Blues. I really don't see the connection between what we call R&B nowadays and what R&B used to be. I guess it was just the natural evolution of the genre that it ended up like it is now.

But anyways, thanks for the clip. Great song.
