Not Working?
And this time the inimitable duo Penn and Teller take on environmentalists in this episode of their Bullshit! series. What? Is this global warming thing really bullshit? and Al Gore is an asshole?

Re: Penn and Teller: Being Green
Not to be confused with Penn and Teller's Environmental Hysteria.
Re: Penn and Teller: Being Green
No confusion. This one is from Season 6:
First aired: 7/24/2008
In episode 606, Penn and Teller consider the popularity of the "green" movement, a largely bogus and hypocritical philosophy that links sanctimonious politics to an "ethical" lifestyle while doing little or nothing to actually create a healthier ecosystem.

Read a damn Science or Nature article and settle the matter for yourself. This is entertaining, but there are better resources available.

Re: Penn and Teller: Being Green
They're not trying to be scientific authorities, or even solid resources. They're what you would call "popularizers" in this case.
A lot of the things Carl Sagan did documentaries on were things other scientists or enthusiasts knew about for a while, and usually in more depth, but Sagan was able to bring this information to the people.

Re: Penn and Teller: Being Green
But they speak with the voice of an authority, without ever stating a clear point or conclusion, so that the viewer leaves with a vague sense of disillusionment with their former position on the subject, but lacking any substantial evidence to completely abandon it. I love the show, but in this case, I don't think they're clear enough. What is the data supporting global warming or contradicting it? and not from some washed up weather person.
Carl Sagan, and more recent figures like Richard Dawkins and Neil Degrasse Tyson, were authorities. They are review writers and go-to people on the things they propose. I trust their judgments because science permeates their words. Where Penn goes on a cursing tirade that evokes our intellect and our emotion, popular scientists temper their words with scientific reservation. Current scientific events are only current because they are uncertain and important, hence why people feel so uncomfortable about them. Penn (I would say Teller, as well, but he doesn't speak) just doesn't have the subtlety or the authority to tromp about with such a lack of authority speaking with authority on numerous topics. Even the authorities whom Penn and Teller garner for the shows are dubious at times.
That's all I'm saying.

Psst. It's television. Viacom, to be exact. Fluff, entertainment value, brain candy, call it what you like.
I happen to enjoy the delivery of these two. Often disagree with the content, as is the case here. But still fun to watch.

Re: Penn and Teller: Being Green
Of course they do their best to entertain, but the title of the program, "Bullshit!", is rather assuming and misleading, especially when they end the program with something like, "We don't know what the truth is...".
