Breaking the Silence
Breaking The Silence: Truth and Lies in the War on Terror is a documentary that dissects the truth and lies in the 'war on terror.' Award-winning journalist John Pilger investigates the discrepancies between American and British claims for the 'war on terror' and the facts on the ground as he finds them in Afghanistan and Washington, DC. In 2001, as the bombs began to drop, George W. Bush promised Afghanistan ‘the generosity of America and its allies.’ Now, the familiar old warlords are regaining power, religious fundamentalism is renewing its grip, and military skirmishes continue routinely. In ‘liberated’ Afghanistan, America has its military base and pipeline access, while the people have the warlords who are, says one woman, "In many ways worse than the Taliban." In Washington, Pilger conducts a series of remarkable interviews with William Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard, and leading Administration officials such as Douglas Feith, Undersecretary of Defense for Policy, and John Bolton, Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security. These people, and the other architects of the Project for the New American Century, were dismissed as 'the crazies' by the first Bush Administration in the early 90s when they first presented their ideas for pre-emptive strikes and world domination. Pilger also interviews presidential candidate General Wesley Clark, and former intelligence officers, all the while raising searching questions about the real motives for the 'war on terror.' While President Bush refers to the US attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq as two 'great victories,' Pilger asks the question “victories over whom, and for what purpose?” Pilger describes Afghanistan as a country "more devastated than anything I have seen since Pol Pot's Cambodia." He finds that Al-Qaida has not been defeated and that the Taliban is re-emerging. And of the ‘victory’ in Iraq, he asks "Is this Bush's Vietnam?"

Listening to those Bush voice overs along with the evidence was gut-wrenching. How this guy didn't spend his entire second term defending himself at The Hague, I'll never figure it out.

Re: Breaking the Silence
I don't know either, man. The Bush administration's propaganda has been so deceitful -- it's retarded. How could anyone choke that shit down? I'm not sure who to blame: the assholes behind power, or those that voted it to continue.

Having good intension is admirable. But, it means nothing if you're blatantly ignorant about the real dangers. Only an idiot could look at Bush and see good leadership. Liberal or conservative - doesn't matter. The man, and his people, were bad salesmen from the start; the con was obvious. At some point, blame HAS to be shared. This is why I propose jail time at Guantanamo for every scum bag or dingbat that voted for the prick.

Re: Breaking the Silence
A friend of mine in Italy summed it up best I think. She said "We don't hold it against you that you put George Bush in the presidency, BUT, the second time? That's what we don't get..." I hear the Brittany Spears song in my head right now...

Re: Breaking the Silence
A complicit media, and a fat, stupid, morally bankrupt public allowed this to happen. Did any of you hear about Seymour Hersh's report that Cheney and company considered constructing phony Iranian PT boats, manning them with SEALs, and attacking one of our ships? The fact that this story has been blacked out is the biggest scandal since 9/11 (and don't get me started on that B.S.!) Add to the litany of offenses the current situation in Georgia. The U.S./Israel are using Georgia as a proxy to engage the Russians. Georgia committed atrocities in Southern Ossetia, and Russia responded. The press would have you believe otherwise, while admitting as much in their own pieces. WE ARE STUPID CATTLE, AND THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION UNDERSTANDS THAT WE WILL JUMP WHEN THEY SAY JUMP. Sick of them? Well, now they'll just pass the baton to Obama or McCain. Same old bull-shit with a clean slate.
