Bernie Mac and an example of why we liked him.

Re: Bernie Mac M*th*rf*ck*r
I own over 160 comedy recordings, and watch all the stand up comedy I can find on television, on the web, and in person. This routine just isnt funny. He is going through all the motions of a good comic, but the good material just isnt there.

I'm sorry he passed away, but he really wasnt funny.

Apparently a lot of people thought he was. They didn't own 160 comedy recordings though, so you probably know better.

What a generic, predictable and lame response. I knew that some jerk off would come back with "I dont have 160 comedy recordings but...". I can see why YOU think he's funny. This routine has none of the elements of great comedy. Its not clever, ironic, thought provoking, its not even an interesting observation. Its fuckin lame. If you want to learn about good comedy, start with Eddie Izzard, Bill Hicks, and George Carlin. Then go back and watch this McComedy. Maybe then you will know what Im talking about. Motherfucker.

I generally agree. His stand up wasn't anything special. He did a much better job as an actor. There is something about him that makes him fun to watch.

He was a funny actor. But as an actor, the funny stuff he was saying was written by someone else, and I think that makes my point. His strongest comedy skill was repeating something funny that someone else wrote, not his own stuff.

A thing to keep in mind too is comedy is ultimately cultural. I didnt grow up in a poor black neighborhood like bernie did, so as a result i dont understand a lot of humor except for what i know ABOUT growing up poor and black from movies, tv, conversation, books etc. The audience reaction and understanding of the observational and cultural humor presented is deeply tied to the experiences shared. I am willing to bet that if i grew up in south central LA, i would think bernie mac is one funny ass mutha-fucka

Helpcall,

What are your top 5-10 recordings in your opinion?

Re: Bernie Mac M*th*rf*ck*r
Some of the best comedy recordings, in no particular order would be Edie Murphy Delirious, any Bill Hicks CD, Dressed To Kill by Eddie Izzard, Complaints and Grievances by George Carlin, Denis Leary No Cure for Cancer, Sam Kennison Live from Hell, and David Cross Shut up You Fuckin Baby.

Bill Hicks and George Carlin werent just comedians, they were both genius level social commentators. Not that you have to be a genius to be funny, but it helps.
