Re: How Do They Do It: Aluminium
interesting that the narrator noted that after land is denuded of its bauxite that it's replanted to encourage return of plants and animals (that survived). I wonder how often this happens--are there laws requiring it? I find it hard to believe that companies struggling to compete with lower-cost, perhaps less-regulated countries like China, would voluntarily spend any add'l % of their revenues.

The US is no angel when it comes to replenishing the land that's been raped. Supposedly strip mining for coal and other mineral wealth is required by law but without enforcement, it's a joke.

Re: How Do They Do It: Aluminium
Well, if it's replanted with all one kind of tree for forestry (especially non-native species), it isn't necessarily an improvement on what was there before, either. Better than bare ground, but not like what was there before they tore it up. There's no biodiversity there. If they just put in things that grow quickly or are all the same and aren't disease resistant or kill native species or that native animals won't eat, you've still really changed everything from the way it was. </lorax>

And what they dont tell you is that any trees grown on private land can be logged, so essentially it goes from a strip mine to a tree farm
