Re: Punch-Drunk Love: Party Scene
Leave it to PT Anderson to bring out the truly freaky, disturbing and artistic in Adam Sandler.

When it came out, Punch-Drunk Love was reviled by the general audience, because they expected an... well, an Adam Sandler movie. It was also snubbed by the cinema snobs because... well, it's an Adam Sandler movie. That leaves the weirdos in gray areas (like me) who made it a point to see it in a theater, and really liked it.

That whole situation reminds me of Robert Altman's "Pret-a-Porter", with a cast of thousands, about the fashion industry during the Spring season runway shows in Paris. I enjoyed it immensely, and asked a few film snobs here and there what they thought of it. They hated it, because it's about the fashion industry, they couldn't get past their "hatred of the superficial" and enjoy the sublime circus on display in the film. Which is to say, the arrogant snobs turned out to be just as superficial as what they proclaim to repudiate.

I have to believe that PT Anderson knew full well that he was mixing oil and water, confounding audience expectations on all fronts by putting Sandler in a dark art film, but how was he able to convince anybody to finance the project? In any case I'm glad they did, this film is the very definition of cult cinema.

Is it wrong that I laughed at the end?
