The problem with targeting the groin area is that people, especially men, are VERY aware of any incoming attacks in that area.
A more effective (less permanently damaging, unless you strike with incredible force) is a strike to the solar plexus. The solar plexus is a wedge of cartilage that hangs from the center of the rib cage. Striking it pushes it in to the diaphragm and the lungs. It's where you've been hit if you've ever had the wind knocked out of you.
