On the Separation of Church and State
Jesse Ventura, the former Minnesota Governor, makes a whole lotta sense, as usual. From Verdict, presented by Dan Abrams. Other guests are Pat Buchanan and Jonathan Alter. (May 8, 2008)

Hold on there, professor.

Pat Buchanan states in this clip that the recent change to gay marriage came from the Democrats.

Wrong.

The recent change that now allows gays to marry in California came from a 68-year old *Republican* judge who based his opinion strictly on the Constitution.

Fabulous.

Buchanan needs to return to the 4pm buffet line so he can get some sleepytime on the lazyboy in front of a Matlock rerun...

Heh. But that "legislate from the bench" idiocy fires up the GOP faithful, no matter it not being based in fact or reality. Buchanan has his role as toeing the party line.

That said, this hopeless insomniac saw the exchange on the 3AM rerun a couple of nights ago. Ventura stole the show with common sense. He's not a liberal by a longshot but aside from his general charisma, he speaks his mind instead of placating voters. I have to respect that.

Too true. I totally disagree with Ventura on many specific issues. But when it comes to someone grasping the big picture of separation of church and state (not to mention the Constitution, use of our military, economic outlook, etc), I'd be down with JV in the Oval Office.

Great. Now the Muslims can demand that the state is infringing on their religion by preventing polygamy. Conversely, communal hippies could argue that 20 people should be able to get married to eachother, and religion is preventing it - they would be right.

Re: On the Separation of Church and State
I don't think that there is anything inherently wrong with polygamy. Brainwashing people while they are young and forcing them into it when they are older is wrong, but if multiple people (that are of the age of consent) decide that they would be happier in a polygamous relationship, I don't see any real reason to stop them.

I don't understand what business the government has in regulating marriage, anyway. They should stick to civil unions, for tax purposes.

Wonder if JV would worry about Osama bin Laden and where he went to church?

Yes, the roots of a man do matter. That is Pat's point. Look at 8 yrs of Clinton; roots did matter, as we learned ... but we voted him in anyhow.

JV is right about the linkage of these religious revelations and the media, however. There's a story here ... doesn't matter how relevant if the media can make something out of it.
