The Hidden Story of Jesus
Theologian Dr Robert Beckford investigates amazing parallels to the Christ story in other faiths, some of them predating Christianity by thousands of years. The Hindu god, Krishna, was conceived by a virgin and his birth was attended by angels, wise men and shepherds. Buddha was also the result of a miraculous birth and visited by wise men bearing gifts. Beckford attempts to unravel the mystery of why there are so many versions of the Christ story across the world and asks which is the real one.

Re: The Hidden Story of Jesus
This piece is utter and complete bullshit. There are currently (that I am aware of) NO original citations from Egyptian/Indian records/sources that suggest these claimed similarities between krishna and Christ. Amazing they can get away with this kind of propoganda on a public station.

Re: The Hidden Story of Jesus
There is a whole class of religions that the story of Jesus is similar to; the "Mysteries" religions... a subset of these religions is known as Paganism.
The dying-resurrecting god-man myth is prevalent in many ancient religions, in Egypt, there is Osiris-Horus, the Greeks have Dionysus, Persia has Mithras, Adonis in Syria... etc etc. These myths, Jesus' inclusive, share similar themes such as virgin birth, death and resurrection/rebirth, etc.
There is Christianity generally understood, and there is Christianity in academia. If you need references and sources, check out the book The Jesus Mysteries, by Freke and Gandy.

I notice that you don't give any details of these mystery religions. Reason: because upon further investigation the claimed similarities are very tenuous at best. Yes, resurection may be a common theme in pagan religions (cyclical nature of the world is an obvious inspiration). But the similarities are almost always glancing. And many of these claimed similarities are unsourced assertions by historians with an axe to grind.

Hmmm. You can infer the religions from the paragraph that follows the one that contains your quote. For example, Osiris, from the Ancient Egyptian religion(s). There is not a unifying name like "Christianity" as there are plenty of deities. Groups obsessed with a certain one are known as cults, for example, "The Cult of Isis."
