i really like this show. but its demise was not marketing. but the average television viewer....who prefers predicable worn act themes.

I agree to an extent, but I think Cross would argue that it is exactly these kinds of people that their marketing failed to reach out to. I feel like the average TV viewer is easily placated by celebrity voices and bright, flashy lights; I could be wrong, but if this is the case, then Cross's indignation would be justified by marketing's failure to attract exactly that kind of person, even if most of the jokes go right over their heads.
Not to hate, but even Frasier was a popular show. I'm guessing that a significant portion of the audience missed a significant portion of the jokes in that show, but it maintained popularity, at least for a period of time.

It wasn't marketing it got shifted around the schedule every month or so.

That's what happens, it's nothing new.
The good, intelligent stuff gets tossed because there are more vapid dipshits in front of the TV than intelligent people with a clue, and some taste. This is why we have the endless barrage of reality TV shows and other regurgitated, mindless bullshit. People don't want it, mostly because they're either too stupid to know any better or so gullible that they'll happily eat what the networks feed them no matter how bad it smells.
