Pissed Catholic Mother
Mom is pissed son is an Atheist.

Re: Pissed Catholic Mother
Im an atheist too but this is too unfair to relgions case.
Its just like penn and teller's bullshit: you get someone from the opposing side, who is a complete dumbshit, to make that veiw look bad.
I still go to church and hear them complain that people persecute them, (I think that is mostly bullshit.) but you putting this up proves their point.

A shame it's an abbreviated clip. I'd have liked to see how this developed.
And the big guy (presumably Dad) seems pretty oblivious to the fracas going on.

Showing ignorant nutters like her really doesn't help religion's case does it?

Re: Pissed Catholic Mother
I thought catholics (like myself) had a more liberal view of the world ?! Now a-days christmas is x-mas, so this guy wont get christmas presents, but x-mas presents. Does that count as a loop hole ?

Re: Pissed Catholic Mother
I could always get out of going to church without claiming to be athiest. More people would go if they didn't have to Kneel. Kneeling sucks hard.
By: supadres
Re: Pissed Catholic Mother
you think kneeling once a week is bad? be glad alla ya dont have to bend your ass over 5 times a day ...
now squeal!

Re: Pissed Catholic Mother
But if you are a catholic, you have padded benches to kneel on. I mean it sucks, but at least it is padded. I went to a catholic school while atheist. The mid-morning prayers over the intercom suck so hard.

Re: Pissed Catholic Mother
I was brought up in a pretty tolerant Irish Catholic household, but I sure as hell knew some neighbourhood fundies who wanted nothing more than to beat people over the head with the bible.

Re: Pissed Catholic Mother
I think that there are fanatics in every religion. It's like it's easier to study bible than to work with poor people.

Re: Pissed Catholic Mother
Is this for real? If it is, I am with spam_vigilante on wishing the clip continued. Ahhh...nothing like the threat of no Christmas presents to instill the fear of god in you! heh heh.

There you go lady, instill the fear of god into him, I'm sure that's going to work....

Re: Pissed Catholic Mother
Someone should spoof a video of this from the son's point of view:
"You're a Catholic? Give me a fucking break, mom. Alright, you know what, we need to stop going to church, forever. I've had it with this."
"I believe in God."
"Bullshit! You've never seen God! And you have no proof..."
"You know, a lot can happen. You can believe-"
"Oh, a lot can happen? All of a sudden you can just start believing in God?"
"Yeah."
"All of a sudden you have proof of God?"
"Yeah."
"Well then let me tell you- you want to believe there's a god, then, you're going to get abosolutely NO - NO RESPECT from me. Because that's what I'm all about - trusting in ourselves, not in some non-existant god!"
"OK!"
"No, it's not ok, mom! It is not ok!"

Whoa, flashbacks to when I was a teenager and I said I was an atheist. I got the no present threat too...but you know what? Totally got presents anyways.

Re: Pissed Catholic Mother
This is what happens when someone blindly believes in a belief system rather than it's core teachings.
Yelling someone into the kingdom of god; that's not what it's all about. So sad.

Re: Pissed Catholic Mother
Yelling and threatening someone into the Kingdom of god is just what the Catholic religion is built on. Just go ask the Native Americans, Spainards, Mexicans, etc, of old.
...And just remember that the Catholic religion adopted Jesus into there teachings and not the other way around.

Re: Pissed Catholic Mother
mmmm, I thought native americans where killed by puritans. Not converted by catholics... It's good that someone uncovered my ignorance.
In another thougt
Maybe there are hipocrites in every christian religion... or maybe acting like Jesus did is really really hard and maybe it's just human nature to make mistakes.
And just remember that the Catholic religion adopted Jesus into there teachings and not the other way around.
You don´t have a clue man. So do you think that attacking catholics will make them better people? Not a clue at all. I'm pretty sure that is not the way that Jesus will act upon. I hope you are not a christian because who ever taught you to do that has no clue either. I hope you don´t think that makes you better than people who comes Yelling and threatening someone into the Kingdom of God.
Just a thought, if you are a christian I hope you appreciate it; if not at least try to be critic but congruent.

Re: Pissed Catholic Mother
Funny, all this time I thought Catholicism was just really hardcore Christianity...
(I mean, not as hardcore as Calvinism, but still...)
...built on believing in Jesus Christ, and that some humans just don't get it.
By the way - should we really be talking about how the Spaniards were yelled at to convert to Catholicism? Should we /really/?

Re: Pissed Catholic Mother
"No No it is not okay!" So.... he's accepting that christmas is something he'll no longer partake in and the mother is saying "No! I'll buy you presents and you'll like it!"... That's just the way I see it haha
By: RookCook
Re: Pissed Catholic Mother
Forget threats of damnation and Hell: NO CHRISTMAS PRESENTS?!?!? Nooooooo! Maybe the rest of the scene went like:
"Actually mom, no. I'm not an atheist. I'm gay."
"Oh, thank God!!!"
See? Soften them up a bit.

It's pretty clear in Leviticus ...
... what Mom needs to do now and it ain't "start going to Church every Sunday" or "no presents".
Imagine how much fun it would be if all the families that claimed to believe in biblical teachings actual adhered to ALL of the rules (some Muslims seem to have already started this practice).
My family would have to go away for a while, at least until all the Fundies killed each other for eating at Red Lobster or wearing polyester.
I can't wait for the Rapture.

Re: It's pretty clear in Leviticus ...
Excellent illustration. I think history reveals a pretty clear pattern in regard to the rise of fundamentalist religion...lots of bloodshed and anguish. If only EVERYONE would just BELIEVE WHAT I BELIEVE. Then the world would be better...
I think it's funny that Mormons, one of the loopiest religions I've heard of (no intended offense), are among the least pushy.

Re: It's pretty clear in Leviticus ...
They obviously don't wake you up at 8 every Saturday morning to tell you that they're concerned for the sake of your eternal soul. Mormons are the pushiest religious believers i've ever come across. Might be a matter of geographical location though.

Re: Pissed Catholic Mother
I got this treatment a few weeks ago, at age twenty, after informing my Mom one Sunday morning that I was agnostic, not even atheist. I tried to be unobtrusive about it. But no, I got threatened with not only no Christmas presents, but loss of my car, my college tuition, and my room in the house. There is a God, or I'm a car-less, uneducated, and homeless son of a bitch.

Re: Pissed Catholic Mother
:D two common phrases
"ignorance is bliss"
"knowledge is freedom"
For me ignorance is more like terrorism not bliss, if this woman knew that this fight was really stupid maybe she could though it better before she started it. The first thing she should knew about it is that is more important to respect her son free will than his love for Jesus or whatever. No one can be forced into love. That's impossible and stupid to try. So this was a lost before started war. I think christianity by itself (not necessarilly in a catholic point of view) is good enough to be a loose for someone who decide to avoid it. So this kid is loosing first by taking advantage of his mom tapping her into this trap and second for negating God and everything that comes with that (like peace of mind when dying, or the feeling that you have some one watching your back.. and didn´t even get miracleus ). So there is no need for her mom to get so rude, just letting him to discover the world by himself will be the best way to go.

Re: Pissed Catholic Mother
So the son is an atheist, but the mom's not?
There are a 1000 gods to pick from. The son dosent believe in 1000 of them, and she dosent believe in 999 of them. She is an athiest, she just isnt smart enough to know it. And when she figures out why she dismisses the other 999, then she will know why her son dismisses hers.

Re: Pissed Catholic Mother
That's a brill comment-got me thinking.
A 1000 God's-tried telling this to a religious person who tried to say 'no matter who we pray to, ot is still ONE GOD!'
Bull
So if I have faith that in the chair I sit in doesn't collapse, then the chair is my God???#It is all down to belief-but that requires faith. It's not something thatcan be adorned on anyone. You either have faith or you don't.
You need faith in something to survive, but that doesn't have to be a God.
How about we have faith in ourselves and nor an invisible entity from 'above'-lets face it, we're cray if we see UFO's, yet religious and holy if we believe in this subject in the sky-who no-one I know of has seen (of course others may beg to differ, but try telling a shrink that and not be committed)
If it makes people happy and helps them to cope better, then by all means, stick to your religion. If it makes you ILL, then it's not right-or have I got that wrong??
Ill as being-unhappy, depressed and fearful of hell.
The mother 'fucking' knows how to get her point across I don't 'fucking' think!
I would sleep so much better at night if people just minded their own bloody business and got on with life rather than fret about who believes in what. Don't hear tribes people complaiing-until someone foreign tries to take over their country and they get shot for not being civil!!
Each to their own-but then you have those extremists...what can you do?
Have faith in your instincts. It is really that simple.
Those who live by the bible don't always live by what the bible says-so it's bullshit again. Some....most should actually read it.....

Nothing wrong with Atheism, nothing wrong with Catholicism, live and let live. I don't understand why people have to push a particular view forward like it is going to turn people into their mode of thinking. Its also funny how some people act like Atheism is a belief system.

Children don't have the intellect to understand religion and should be protected from it,otherwise it is just brain washing.
I like Noam Chomsky's view when he wrote"religions were created to make large masses of people willfully submissive"so that a few could control the majority.Gee,it might even be used to start a war or two!!

Re: Pissed Catholic Mother
I'm actually Catholic and I was confirmed into the Church in 2006.
Now, this mom's got it all wrong. Her child can believe what he wants to believe, but she's not doing anything to remedy the problem. The problem isnt that her son is an atheist, it's that SHE doesn't know a damn thing about the point of religion, at least by my point of view.
The one major point of all religions (including Islam despite the media's influence) is to be at peace with yourself and with the rest of the world. Granted, men shed blood in the name of God saying they are good men, but didn't God say that "Thou shalt not murder"? Isn't the greatest law "to love others as God has loved you"?
Calling your son's beliefs "bullshit" doesn't really constitute love in my eyes, but that's just my belief. ;)
So, be at peace with yourself and the world. How you do it is up to you. Cheers.

Re: Pissed Catholic Mother
I am completely fine with people treating their religion more as a philosophy. It's the idea that I-am-right-and-you-are-wrong-and-if-you-don't-follow-me-you-will-go-to-hell, which leads to the bloodshed that you speak of. I think that That idea is created in all religions by the belief that their belief is from a god. The whole philosophy to be at peace with yourself and neighbors does not need any divinity to be true. if you treat jesus, buddha as just an ideal way to live your life, then you will be at peace. I think that divinity component just brings more stress because your scared of eternal punishment for failure.
