Though technically, it wasn't the drugs that got him. From what I understand, he choked on his vomit. So, for that reason, the dialogue should end with:

Haha, for musicians like Hendrix a new guitar was easy to get... so smashing it was easy. (The Who did it all the time, because the attention resulting from that act was much more rewarding than the cost of re-purchasing the equipment.)
Anyway that guitar was special to him (he kissed it before destroying it) so it may have been more to it.
But nevertheless you have to consider that rock stars like him couldn't care less about a few hundred bucks... compared to the unforgotten moments this acts could produce in the people's minds.
