John Cage: 4'33''
What a performance! John Cage's most famous - and notorious - composition. SFW (Safe for Work, or So Fucking What, depending on your interpretation).

UGH! John Cage created this as a surprise to the audience. It was never meant to be duplicated, and in fact CAN'T be duplicated because the audience knows what's coming, thus ruining the entire experience.

Pointless.

/bitter art major.

Re: John Cage: 4'33''
The laughter at the brow wipe ruined it all. People knew what to expect. And the commentators at the end seemed almost patronizing of the event. Either that or they were the self-fellating artsy types.

Re: John Cage: 4'33''
no john cage just wanted people to pay attention to the sound around them. He belied and rightly so that there is no silence and all sound is beautiful even awkwardness of a performer standing motionless with only the sounds of a bored audience. It doesn't really matter if you say it coming. shut your mouth and open your ears!

I think the audience tension is the heart of the event. How people react to silence is curious. The response it elicits from us is also important. This kind of thing can actually enrage some people wherein the piece becomes a revolutionary act.
