Choosing My Religion (2)
An explanation of how I've come to choose which god to follow. I'm not saying this method is right for everyone, but it worked for me.

Wasn't that the point? If I'm correct in assuming this offended because you're Christian, you need to learn to laugh. If you were being sarcastic, you have my full consent to ridicule me to no end, because in that case I'm an idiot.

Re: Choosing My Religion (2)
His logic falls apart when he disregards the religions not actively trying to get followers.
If they don't go after people its probably b/c the religion is sound on its own w/o needing the popular vote to back it up, and that the followers are happy enough with it that they don't need to convince other people to convince themselves.

Re: Choosing My Religion (2)
Dave, I am going to have to respectfully disagree with your opinion regarding prosthelatizing religions. I think the contrary is true regarding the happiness of believers and their desire for converts. Wouldn't it make sense that someone who is happy and fulfilled in his or her religious beliefs would like to spread that fulfillment to others.
Taking the religious element out of it, the contributers here at Milk and Cookies a kind of prosthelatizing. Someone finds something they like, such as a video or a game or some other link and they share it with everyone on here not because they need to convince themselves that it's a cool link but because they liked and and think other people will as well.

Re: Choosing My Religion (2)
I'm confused. Are our heads so far up our asses that we're really taking this video seriously?
That aside, your argument is as flawed as your analogy. People don't want to spread their religion because it makes them happy, they want to spread their religion because they think it's true. Think of Judaism: do you think the ban on eating bacon makes the Jews more or less happy?
As for your analogy, M&C is not a world-view. You don't PROSELYTIZE for a website, you advertise. From a religious person's perspective, someone who doesn't approve of their religion is doing something inherently incorrect; from the M&C user's perspective, someone who doesn't approve of M&C probably just has less time to kill.

Re: Choosing My Religion (2)
I was not taking the video seriously, rather Dave's argument which I thought brought up some interesting points.
As far as my argument, I think you are missing the point as far as religious people spreading their religion because of their belief in its truth. It is self evident that religious people will believe their religion to be true regardless of whether they preach their beliefs to others or not. However it is the fact that believers find fulfillment in those beliefs that makes them want to spread their religion. Regarding the Jews and bacon, there is a lot more to religion than dietary laws and so forth. I think they are more happy because they believe that God loves them and hears their prayers, etc. Whether or not you believe that is irrelevant, the fact that they do makes them happy.
As far as M&C, I do agree that I could have thought up a better analogy but I still agree with the basic principle. There are many things other than religion that people hold true and share with others because they find them enjoyable. I stand by what I said, but if I'd had the time and desire I'd have used a better analogy. Then again, the analogy of reducing the Jewish faith to a simple ban on bacon is flawed as well.

Re: Choosing My Religion (2)
Actively seeking converts and spreading the word of your religion does not mean that your religion is making you happy or giving you a sense of fulfillment.

Re: Choosing My Religion (2)
As a child i used to be overjoyed with the idea that santa claus would reward me with with gifts. Then I found he didn't really exist. Later I fell again for the concept of god. Then I found...
