Mahna Mahna: Original Video
One of the one of the strange and wonderful skits from The Muppet show.

Very similar to many skits done on Sesame Street.

No words, just sounds and bright colors, which young children respond to very well.

Re: Mahna Mahna: Original Video
Cut from: http://www.poppyfields.net/poppy/mahna.html

Originally from 1976 (episode 17 of the 1st season of the Muppet Show), and sung by Mahna Mahna and the two Snowths, the Mahna Mahna song was reborn as the Phenomena song in episode 7 of Muppets Tonight (broadcast 20/9/96 in the UK, 23/6/96 in the US). The Phenomena song was performed by Dr. (Sandra) Bullock the Animal Psychiatrist, who was visited by Kermit. Kermit's problem was that he saw strange creatures whenever he said the word "phenomena"...

Re: Mahna Mahna: Original Video
This is FYI but might disturb long time muppets fans. It's hard to believe, but this particular muppets favorite did not originate with jim henson. In fact, it has a far less wholesome origin then that. It was written by some italian for a swedish porno flick, and obviously there were enough horny europeans to land that song near the peak of the top 40 for Europe. It was there that Jim Henson took the song and used it for the muppets. So whenever I hear this song, I fall over laughing for different reasons.

Re: Mahna Mahna: Original Video
"Ma-Na-Ma-Na"
Original Airdate: November 30, 1969

The now famous, Mahna Mahna was created specifically for this appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. He was designed as a symbol of free expression, a concept that was quite popular in the 1960's. The original song "Ma-Na-Ma-Na" was written by Italian artist Peter Umilioni.

Two cow-like creatures, the Snowths (a blend of the words 'snout' and 'mouth'), sing "Doo Doo Dee Doo-Doo". As the song continues, Mahna Mahna upstages the Snowths by excitedly repeating his name. A couple things to look for in this original rendition, Mahna Mahna winks quite a bit throughout this piece which adds to the humor. He also looks directly into the nose of each of the Snowths as he sings Mahna Mahna.

Mahna Mahna would also air on Sesame Street in 1969 and the first episode of the Muppet Show starring Juliet Prowse. A parody of Mahna Mahna was on the 1996 Sandra Bullock episode of Muppets Tonight. Mahna Mahna was also performed live in December 2001 at the Muppet Show Live during MuppetFest.

Re: Mahna Mahna: Original Video
Another source of info on the origin of this song:

Mah Na Mah Na
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahna_Mahna

Mah Na Mah Na is a well-known song, written in 1968 by Piero Umiliani as a soundtrack for the softcore documentary Svezia, Inferno e Paradiso ("Sweden, Hell or Heaven") about sexual activity in Sweden. The song was a hit in many countries including the USA in 1968-9. The song's "lyric" has no actual words, just a series of vocal sounds imitative of scat singing.

In 1969 it was recorded by Henri Salvador under the title "Mais Non, Mais Non", with lyrics he had written in French to Umiliani's tune.

The song subsequently became familiar to many from its rendition on the Muppet Show and Sesame Street. It was performed in 1976 by the Muppets as "Mahna Mahna", and credited to "Manah Manah and the Snowths". As a result, the original Piero Umiliani recording finally became a hit in the UK, where the Muppet Show soundtrack album featuring the Muppets' version went to number one. The alt.tv.muppets FAQ considers "Mahna Mahna" to be the best Muppet sketch ever. The Muppet version of the song is available on various Muppet collections and recordings.

The song has resurfaced in many guises. The Muppets' comeback series Muppets Tonight revisited it as a parody using the word "phenomena" in place of the title; it also featured in an episode of the sitcom The Office and formed the basis for a 1997 UK hit single, "No Way No Way" by Vanilla. In 2004, it was featured in a Diet Cherry-Vanilla Dr Pepper commercial. It was featured in the pilot of the sitcom Committed where Marni attempted to get her date to sing a duet with her in a restaurant, and has continued to appear in the background as her ringtone.

Re: Sesame Street MahnaMahna
i was watching sesame street the other day and at the end of the show they had a montage type thing with a bunch of old clips from past sesame streets. the mah na mah na song was on there with a little brown guy with a striped sweater instead of purple guy with a green vest and two little girls instead of the two monsters. anyway, ive been looking for that clip ever since i saw it and i cannot find it yet. if anyone does, i too would like to know.

I don't care where the song originated; Jim Henson and Sesame Street are 2 of the best thing for children's education ever.
